Coaches:
Another boys season is in the books, so I thought this would be a good time to get some information to you concerning the next few weeks in particular, as well as the rest of the school year. Many apologies if you receive this more than once.

All American/Midwest
Recently, we voted on the boys All American and All Midwest selections.  Missouri is allotted 1 All American and a total of 8 All Midwest players (the All American counts as an All Midwest selection) by the NSCAA.  The NSCAA determines this based on high school memberships with the NSCAA.  Basically, the more people who belong to NSCAA from Missouri and who register as a high school coach, the more picks we get.  Here’s how the Midwest region is allotted:

Iowa :                 4 Total – 1 All-American
Illinois :              13 Total – 2 All Americans
Kansas              5 Total – 1 All American
Minnesota          7 Total – 1 All American
Missouri             8 Total – 1 All American

In fairness to the process, the only way we can determine these players is by vote. One of the problems we have with determining the players is that the NSCAA must have our players by Nov. 15, which is before the Class 3 finals. Obviously, it would be better for us to wait until the end of the season to determine these honors, but we have no choice in the manner. This year’s Missouri boys representatives are:

1. TJ Novak (SR) Rockwood Summit (All American/Midwest)
2. Denaldin Hamzagic (SR) Mehlville (All Midwest)
3. Eric Sweetin (SR) Rockhurst  (All Midwest)
4. Jack Traynor (SR) Francis Howell North (All Midwest)
5. Zach Bauer (SR) CBC (All Midwest)
6. Tim Walters (SR) Lafayette (All Midwest)
7. Brent Zang (SR) SLUH (All Midwest)
8. Michael Ferguson (SR) Rock Bridge (All Midwest)
9. Tim Gabel (SR) Lafayette – ALTERNATE

Girls All America/Midwest players are determined in June after the season ends.

Coach of the Year
The NSCAA also requires that we send in our state coaches of the year by Nov. 15.  The NSCAA honors three classes of coaches:  Private School, Large School and Public School This year’s winners are:

Large School:  Terry Michler (CBC)
Private School:  Greg Koeller (St. Dominic)
Public School:  Chris Kappler (Rockwood Summit)

All State Selections

In early December we will hold three conference calls that will select the all state teams.  For each call, regional representatives will help determine the top players in the state based on what their regions came up with.  In most cases, the 1st team will be somewhere between 18-23 players. The 2nd team will be around 20 players and then a small list (8-14) of Honorable Mention will be determined.  Voting is not done by position. We try to choose the most worthy players, regardless of position.  Upon completion of the all state teams, we will also pick a goalkeeper of the year, offensive player of the year, defensive player of the year and player of the year. We will also do our final state rankings for the year.

If you have questions about getting your players recognized, please contact the following:

Class 3 – Chris Miller (Jeff City) chris.miller@jcps.k12.mo.us
Class 2 – Chris Thompson (Warrensburg) cthompson@warrensburg.k12.mo.us

We will announce the All State teams the week of Dec. 13 to the media and the association website.

If you send me requests, I will try to create a spot on the website or send a mass email. If I’ve missed or forgotten any others looking for games, tournaments or teams, please let me know.  One good spot to look is on the MSHSAA web site:  www.mshsaa.org.

Miscellaneous
This year’s NSCAA Convention will be held in Baltimore Jan. 12-16.  For more information (list of presenters, cost, registration, etc.), go to www.nscaa.com. I believe early registration ends Dec. 10.

Finally, I’d like to apologize for any inconveniences we’ve had this year because of my email.  We changed systems this year and the new system did not allow me to do as much as I have done in the past. Thankfully, the school recognized how poor our new system was and will be installing a new one over the Christmas holidays.  Hopefully, that will mean a much easier go of it for the girls’ season.
Have a great end of the year and holiday season!

Peace.

Chris Miller, MSHSCCA President
